Janitor AI alternatives: why people switch and what to pick

Most people looking for Janitor AI alternatives want one of three things: no proxy or API key setup, a single private companion instead of a huge public bot library, or a price they can predict. Pick the alternative that fixes your specific complaint. A tool that solves all three for everyone doesn't exist.

If setup is the problem, look at apps that host their own models. If you want one ongoing relationship, look at companion apps built around a character you choose or design. If you actually like browsing thousands of community bots, Janitor's paid tier may be a better answer than leaving. That covers the usual searches: sites like Janitor AI, apps like Janitor AI, and a Janitor AI alternative for NSFW chat specifically.

Research note, 24 September 2026: We publish mywifu, so we have a commercial interest in this topic. Janitor AI facts below come from its public help center and announcement pages, checked on 24 September 2026. We did not run a paid benchmark of Janitor AI or any other service. Janitor's homepage and pricing pages blocked our automated check, so we cite its help center instead.

Why people leave Janitor AI

Janitor AI is a character chat site with a large library of user-made bots. Its free tier offers "unlimited chats with millions of bots," access to standard chat models and a context limit of around 9k tokens, according to its subscription FAQ. That is a generous starting point. The friction usually shows up later.

The proxy and API question

Out of the box you chat with JLLM, Janitor's own hosted model. People who want other models connect an outside provider. Janitor's user guides include a proxy quickstart that walks through signing up at OpenRouter and getting a key. It is documented and workable. It is also a second account, a second bill and a settings screen many people would rather skip.

In 2026 Janitor added the janitor+ Router. It is "currently limited to janitor+ subscribers," and usage "is billed per token at the price shown for each model." Janitor calls it "an alternative to proxy setups, not a forced migration," and says JLLM+ remains the recommended model for general roleplay. So the Router removes the key-copying, but not the per-token thinking.

Cost that stacks up

Janitor+ launched on 24 June 2026 at US$12.99 per month, with 5x more context, priority messages and monthly swipes on its frontier models. The announcement doesn't mention a trial. Payments go through Stripe, and the FAQ says subscriptions are "generally non-refundable, except where required by our Terms of Service or applicable law."

The subscription itself is modest. The catch is layering: a monthly plan, plus Router token usage, plus a separate proxy provider if you still use one. Add those up before comparing against anything else.

A public bot library versus a private companion

Janitor is shaped around discovering and sharing community characters. Bots come and go, creators edit them, and the same character is used by many people. That suits people who enjoy variety.

If what you want is one companion who stays yours over weeks of conversation, you are working against the platform's default shape. Janitor's own subscription FAQ puts the free model's context limit at around 9,000 tokens, which fills up in a long story.

Reliability and moderation friction (user reports)

Third-party roundups repeat complaints about slowdowns at busy times, confusing paid API requirements and new verification steps for adult content. We did not find these confirmed on an official Janitor AI page, so treat them as user reports, not documented facts.

What is documented: Janitor runs a detailed content guidelines section covering images, violence, harassment, copyrighted content and more. Some roundups also say NSFW is off by default in the mobile apps. The official app FAQ we checked did not mention that, so we can't confirm it.

What to check before you switch

Run through this list with any candidate, including ours:

  • Setup: Does chat work right after signup, or do you need an outside API key?
  • Character model: Public library, private companion, or both?
  • Memory: Is a context or memory limit published anywhere? Test it with a detail you mention early and ask about later.
  • Age and content rules: Is there an 18+ gate, and are the adult content rules written down?
  • Price shape: Monthly renewal, per-token billing, credits, or a one-time purchase?
  • Exit route: How do you cancel, and how do you delete your account and data?

Our guide to AI companion privacy and safety goes deeper on the last point.

Janitor AI alternatives by need

This is not a ranked top-ten list. The right pick depends on which friction sent you looking.

You want zero API or proxy setup

Look for services that host their models and bill inside the app. You trade some model choice for a setup that works on day one. Check whether "no setup" also means per-message limits or credit costs somewhere else.

On mywifu there is no key to paste. Browse 111 ready-made companions, realistic and anime, and pick one to chat with. Photos, short videos and voice calls cost credits from a membership.

You want a private, persistent companion

This is about shaping one character and coming back to her, instead of hunting for a bot someone else wrote. Companion apps generally let you set appearance, personality and relationship style up front.

Our character creator lets you pick a Realistic, Anime or Illustrated style, then appearance, adult age, personality, relationship and voice. You can start designing before you have an account. An account is needed to generate the first three free preview photos.

People coming from Janitor often like anime-styled characters. These are three ready-made anime companions on Discover:

You like the public library, just want it steadier

Then the honest answer may be to stay. Janitor+ adds priority messages and more context, and the free tier stays available. Other community-bot sites exist, but we didn't verify their current features for this article, so we won't name winners. Compare their written rules and pricing pages directly. Our Character AI alternatives comparison covers a few services we did check.

What mywifu costs

Memberships are one-time purchases with no automatic renewal, listed on the premium page:

  • US$19.99 for 30 days with 1,000 credits
  • US$49.99 for 90 days with 3,000 credits
  • US$99.99 for 365 days with 12,000 credits
  • US$197 lifetime with 24,000 credits

Lifetime access is not unlimited credits. Photos, video and voice calls each use credits, so a heavy media user will spend faster than someone who mostly texts.

Compare that with Janitor on a monthly basis. Twelve months of Janitor+ is US$155.88 before any Router tokens. That doesn't make either one cheaper for you; it depends whether you mainly want text chat with many bots or media with one companion.

A quick way to test any alternative

Give each app the same short scenario, such as two fictional adults planning a lazy Sunday.

  1. State two preferences early, like "short replies" and "hates crowds."
  2. Twenty messages later, ask what she remembers about you.
  3. Correct one detail and see if the correction sticks.
  4. Come back the next day and continue the same story.
  5. Note what it cost you, including tokens or credits.

Where to start

Sites like Janitor AI split into two camps: open bot libraries and private companion apps. If the proxy setup or the shared-library feel is why you're leaving, a companion app is the more direct fix. If you love the library, try Janitor+ before switching.

To see whether a private companion suits you, start a design in the creator and check your three free preview photos before paying for anything. For more on adult chat options, read our NSFW AI chat guide.
