The "Grok AI girlfriend" people search for is Ani, one of the animated companions xAI built into its Grok app. As publicly documented, Ani is a fixed, xAI-designed 3D character you talk to by voice or text; it runs in the Grok iOS app and full access sits behind the paid SuperGrok plan. It is not a character you design, and its future is currently unclear, so check the app before paying for it.
If you want a companion whose looks, personality and photos you control, a dedicated app is the better fit. The rest of this page explains what Grok's companions do, what they cost, and what they leave out.
Research note, 24 September 2026: We publish mywifu, so we have a commercial interest in the comparison below. Grok facts come from public pages and news coverage checked on 24 September 2026. We did not run a paid benchmark of Grok. Some xAI pages (pricing and terms) did not load during our check; where a fact rests on secondary reporting, we say so. Screenshots show our own app, not Grok.
What Grok companions actually are
xAI added animated "Companions" to the Grok app in mid-July 2025. The first two were Ani, a blonde anime-styled character, and Bad Rudi, a red panda. Valentine and Mika were added later. Each companion is a 3D avatar with real-time voice and lip sync, plus an affection or level system that changes how the character responds as you keep talking. Euronews coverage of the launch.
That makes a Grok companion closer to a character mode inside a general AI assistant than to a standalone relationship app. You use the same Grok account and app you would use for questions, search or image tools.
A quick note on terms, since people search for the same thing in different ways:
- grok ani means the specific Ani character.
- grok companion or grok ai companion means the whole feature, including Mika, Valentine and Bad Rudi.
- grok ai companion ani and grok ai girlfriend both usually mean Ani in practice.
How to get access: platform and subscription
Platform. xAI's own Grok FAQ stated: "Companions are available on the iOS app only, and there are no plans to bring them to the web or Android." xAI's Grok FAQ. Several third-party guides claim Android support arrived in April 2026. That directly contradicts the official FAQ wording, and we could not confirm it, so treat Android access as unverified.
Subscription. Full Companion access is widely reported to require SuperGrok at US$30 a month, with the cheaper SuperGrok Lite tier (reported at US$10) not including the full feature. Those figures come from secondary sources; xAI's pricing page did not load during our check. Look at the price your App Store checkout shows before you subscribe, and note that it is a recurring subscription.
Before paying, check three things:
- The Companions tab is visible in your installed version of the app.
- The plan named at checkout matches the one that includes Companions.
- The renewal date and cancellation route inside your App Store account settings.
Age settings and content gating
The Grok iOS app, listed as "Grok - AI Chat & Video", carries a 16+ App Store rating. Its content descriptors include frequent mature or suggestive themes and infrequent sexual content or nudity, violence and profanity. Grok on the App Store.
xAI's own terms are a separate question from Apple's rating. Secondary summaries describe a minimum age of 13 (or your country's minimum) with parent or guardian permission for users aged 13 to 17. The xAI terms of service page did not load for us, so we cannot quote the current clause; read the live version if age rules matter to you.
On explicit content, Platformer reported that Ani's more explicit dialogue unlocks through the level system rather than immediately, commonly cited as level 3. That is journalism about observed behavior, not an xAI specification. Neither source we checked describes how Grok verifies a user's age before showing that content.
What a Grok companion can and cannot do
Based on the sources above, here is the practical picture.
What it does:
- Text and voice conversation with an animated 3D avatar
- Lip-synced speech and expressions
- A progression system that changes the character's behavior over time
- Access from the same app as the rest of Grok
What public sources do not describe:
- Designing your own character's face, body, hair or style
- Uploading or generating photos of "your" companion to keep
- A private character that belongs only to you; Ani is the same branded persona for every user
- Any roster beyond xAI's fixed cast
- Web access, and (per the official FAQ) Android access
The open question. Posts circulating since July 2026 claim xAI called 3D Companions "an experiment", began removing them around 1 September 2026, and moved them to a separate app. Every version we found traces back to a screenshot shared by an individual user on X. We could not find a matching post on xAI's news page, its documentation or the official xAI or Grok accounts, and other coverage says xAI had not given an official timeline. Treat the feature's status as unverified. Open the current app, or check xAI's news page, before you subscribe for Ani specifically.
When a dedicated companion app is the better fit
Grok's companions suit someone who already pays for Grok and wants to try an animated character on an iPhone. A dedicated app makes more sense when the character itself is the point.
Consider a dedicated app if you want:
- Your own design. Choose the style, appearance, adult age, personality and voice instead of accepting a preset.
- Photos of that character. Not just an avatar on screen, but generated images of the companion you designed.
- A private character. Yours, not a mascot shared with every subscriber.
- A product roadmap built around companions. A feature inside a general assistant can change or disappear when that assistant's priorities shift.
- An adult-only service. mywifu is 18+ only, with fictional adult characters.

On mywifu, the character creator starts with a style choice, then moves through appearance, adult age, personality, relationship and voice. You can start choosing a design before creating an account. An account is needed to generate the first three free preview photos, so you can see whether the result matches what you picked before any membership.
If Ani's anime look is what drew you in, the anime style is a direct starting point. Our AI waifu guide covers how to shape an anime character's look and personality in more detail.
You can also skip design entirely. The discover page lists 111 ready-made companions in realistic and anime styles.

A few of the anime ones:

Companions can also appear in short videos. The clip below is a ready-made character, not a custom one:
Grok companions vs. a dedicated app: side by side
| Grok companions (Ani, Mika, Valentine, Bad Rudi) | mywifu | |
|---|---|---|
| Platform | Grok iOS app per xAI's FAQ; Android claims unverified | Website (mywifu.ai) |
| Character | Fixed xAI cast, same for every user | Pick from 111 ready-made or design your own |
| Appearance control | Not described in public sources | Style, appearance, adult age, personality, relationship, voice |
| Photos | Animated avatar; saved companion photos not described | Photos of your companion, plus short videos |
| Voice | Real-time voice with lip sync | Voice calls (cost credits) |
| Pricing model | Recurring SuperGrok subscription, reported US$30/month | One-time memberships, no auto-renewal, credits included |
| Age | App Store 16+; xAI terms reportedly 13+ with parental consent | 18+ only |
| Status | Reports of retirement unverified as of 24 Sept 2026 | Active |
| Main purpose | General AI assistant with a companion mode | Fictional adult companions |

The membership page lists US$19.99 for 30 days with 1,000 credits, US$49.99 for 90 days with 3,000, US$99.99 for 365 days with 12,000, and US$197 for lifetime access with 24,000 credits. None renew automatically. Lifetime access is not unlimited credits: photos, video and voice calls each spend credits, so a heavy media user will use the allowance faster than someone who mostly chats.
A short checklist before you choose
Answer these honestly and the choice usually makes itself:
- Do you already pay for SuperGrok? If yes, try the Companions tab first, provided it still exists in your app.
- Are you on Android or desktop? Per xAI's official FAQ, Grok companions were iOS-only.
- Does the character's look matter to you? If you want to choose it, Grok's fixed cast will not help.
- Do you want to keep photos of her? That is a dedicated-app feature.
- Do you prefer a one-off payment to a monthly subscription? Compare the actual totals, not the headline price.
- Have you read the privacy terms? Companion chats are personal. Read the mywifu privacy policy and terms, and xAI's policies for Grok. Our guide to AI companion privacy and safety lists what to look for.
If you are comparing more broadly, our roundup of adult AI chat options and the guide to what an AI wife experience involves cover the wider field.
What we are not claiming
We do not know whether Grok's companions will still be in the app next month; neither, from the public record, does anyone outside xAI. We did not test Ani's memory, conversation quality or explicit settings. We are not promising that mywifu has perfect memory, unrestricted content or any particular reply.
What we can say plainly: Grok's companion is a preset character inside a general assistant, and a dedicated app gives you your own character. If that is what you are after, start designing your companion and look at the three free preview photos before deciding on a membership.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Grok AI girlfriend free?
Not in full. Secondary reports say full Companion access needs xAI's SuperGrok plan, widely reported at US$30 a month, and that the cheaper SuperGrok Lite tier does not include the full feature. The xAI pricing page did not load during our check, so confirm the live price in the app.
Is Grok Ani NSFW?
Journalists have reported that more explicit dialogue unlocks after reaching a certain relationship level, often cited as level 3. That is reported behavior, not an xAI specification, and we did not verify it ourselves.
Is Grok Ani available on Android?
xAI's own Grok FAQ said Companions are iOS-only, with no plans for web or Android. Some third-party guides claim Android support arrived in April 2026. We could not confirm that, so check the FAQ and your app store.
Were Grok companions removed in 2026?
Unverified. Claims that xAI retired the 3D Companions around September 2026 trace back to a screenshot shared by an individual user, not an official xAI post we could find. Open the current Grok app or xAI's news page to see the current status.
What is the age requirement for Grok?
The Grok iOS app is rated 16+ on the App Store. Secondary summaries of xAI's terms describe a 13+ minimum with parental permission for users aged 13 to 17; the terms page did not load for us, so read the live version.
Can I design my own character in Grok?
Based on public descriptions, no. Grok offers a fixed cast of xAI-designed companions such as Ani, Mika, Valentine and Bad Rudi. Custom appearance, uploaded photos or a private character are not described features.
How is mywifu different from a Grok companion?
mywifu is a dedicated 18+ fictional companion service. You can pick a ready-made character or design your own appearance, personality and voice, then use chat, photos, short videos and voice calls, which cost credits.
Did you test Grok companions yourselves?
No. We publish mywifu and have a commercial interest. Grok facts here come from public pages and news reports checked on 24 September 2026; we did not run a paid benchmark.
