Best AI Companion Apps: Friend, Partner or Roleplay

The best AI companion depends on what you want: a friend, a partner, roleplay, voice or photos. Compare Replika, Nomi, Kindroid, Character.AI and more.

Best AI Companion Apps: Friend, Partner or Roleplay

"Best AI companion" means different things to different people. One person wants someone to talk to after work. Another wants a flirty partner who sends photos. A third wants a cast of characters for a fantasy campaign. No app is the best at all three, and most apps are honest about which one they are built for if you read their own pages.

This guide sorts the well-known apps by what you want from them, then gives you a 20-minute trial method and a list of red flags. If you already know you want a romantic partner and only need to compare those apps, our AI girlfriend app comparison goes deeper on that one lane.

Research note, September 2026: We publish mywifu, so we have a commercial interest. Facts about other apps come from their official websites, help centers and blogs as of September 2026. Some pages blocked our checks; we say so where that happened. We did not run a paid benchmark of any competitor, and we do not quote prices for other apps because they change often. Check the live checkout before paying.

Start with the job, not the app

Before comparing features, write one sentence: "I want an AI companion so that I can ___." Your answer will usually land in one of six lanes.

What you wantApps built for that lane (as of September 2026)What to test first

Several apps appear in more than one row. That is fine. Pick the row that matters most and treat the rest as a bonus.

If you want a friend to talk to

Friend-style companions focus on everyday conversation: your day, your plans, a bad meeting, a small win. The quality test is attention. A good friend app asks one real follow-up question instead of three generic ones.

  • Replika calls itself "The AI friend to do life with" on replika.com. Its homepage shows friend, romance and mentor uses, voice calls, and apps for iOS and Android, plus a web version. Its terms of service say users must be 18 or older.
  • Nomi describes "An AI Companion with Memory and a Soul" on nomi.ai, and lists friendship, a romantic relationship or a mentor as options. It advertises short, medium and long-term memory, voice chats and selfies, on web, iOS and Android.
  • Pi, the assistant from Inflection AI, was built around supportive conversation. Our check of pi.ai returned an error, and third-party reviews from 2026 say it is still live but receiving little new development. Treat its current status as unverified and open the site yourself.

mywifu does not belong in this lane. It is an adult romantic companion app, and it would be misleading to suggest it as a platonic friend.

If you want a romantic partner

Romance apps add flirting, relationship stages and, on adult services, explicit roleplay. The questions that matter here are control and consistency: can you decide who she is, and does she stay that person?

  • Replika, Nomi and Kindroid all offer romantic relationships alongside other roles, based on their official pages.
  • Candy.ai describes itself on candy.ai as an AI girlfriend app with ready-made characters in girlfriend, boyfriend and anime categories, a "Create My AI Girlfriend" builder, chat, voice, images and video. It states the service is for users 18 and older.
  • mywifu is an 18+ web app focused only on AI girlfriends. You pick one of 111 ready-made companions on the discover page (86 realistic, 25 anime) or design your own in the creator: style, adult age, looks, personality, how she flirts, how fast things move and her voice. There are no AI boyfriends on mywifu.

A tip that saves money: before paying anywhere, write down three traits you want and one thing she should never do. Then see whether the app gives you a way to set those, either in a builder or by telling her in chat.

If you want roleplay and storytelling

Story-first apps are closer to interactive fiction than to a relationship. You pick a character or scenario from a large library, many of them written by other users, and play a scene.

  • Character.AI is the best-known example. On its official blog the company announced it would remove open-ended chat for users under 18 by 25 November 2025, keeping features such as stories and videos for teens. Adult content is not what the platform is for; our guide to Character.AI alternatives covers the options if that is what you need.
  • Talkie is a character chat app from MiniMax, with text and voice chat and user-created characters, according to third-party reviews. Its official site gave us little detail and sources disagree on its age rating, so check the app store listing in your country.

On mywifu, roleplay happens with one character you know well rather than a library of strangers. That suits a long romantic story with the same partner. It suits a 12-character fantasy campaign less well.

If you want voice conversation

Voice changes the experience more than any other feature. A reply that reads well can sound flat, and a half-second delay can make a call feel like a walkie-talkie.

  • Replika advertises voice calls on its homepage.
  • Nomi advertises voice chats with emotional tone.
  • Kindroid's help center describes calls, group calls and live video calls, with some of these tied to a subscription.
  • Grok's animated companions use real-time voice, but their availability is unclear; our Grok AI girlfriend guide explains what we could and could not confirm.
  • mywifu has live voice calls in the voice you chose for her, billed at 120 credits per started minute.

Test voice with a two-minute call where you interrupt her once and change topic once. Our guide to AI girlfriends with voice calls has a longer checklist.

If you want photos and video

Visual companions generate pictures, and sometimes short clips, of the character. The hard part is not getting one good image. It is getting the tenth image to show the same face.

  • Kindroid's help center describes selfies and group selfies.
  • Candy.ai lists images and video on its homepage.
  • On mywifu, you open Photo or Video mode on her page and describe the scene in your own words. A photo costs 100 credits and a short video 600. Everything lands in a private gallery that only your account can see. The first three photos of a character you create are free once you have an account.

A good first photo request is specific but short: "Evening, rooftop bar, black dress, warm string lights, she is laughing at something off camera." Long prompts with ten outfit details tend to change her face.

If you want several characters at once

Group chat lets you put more than one character in a scene: two friends arguing over dinner plans, or a party in a fantasy tavern.

  • Nomi says you can "create multiple Nomis" and put them in a group chat.
  • Kindroid's help center says group chat is available only to paid subscribers, and group calls start from the group chat screen.

mywifu does not offer group chats. Each companion has her own conversation.

A 20-minute trial that tells you more than reviews

Use the same script on every app you are considering. Twenty minutes is enough to rule most of them out.

  1. Minutes 0 to 3: the setup. Create or pick a character. Note how much you could decide and what was fixed.
  2. Minutes 3 to 8: a real opener. Send something with detail: "Long day. My manager moved the deadline to Friday and I haven't eaten. Talk to me while I cook pasta." Count the follow-up questions that use your details.
  3. Minutes 8 to 11: a boundary. Say "Please don't call me babe." Ten messages later, see if she still does.
  4. Minutes 11 to 14: a memory check. Mention your dog's name early, change the subject twice, then ask "What's my dog called?"
  5. Minutes 14 to 17: the premium feature. Try the voice call or one image, whichever you care about. Note the cost before you press the button.
  6. Minutes 17 to 20: the exit. Find account deletion, subscription settings and the privacy policy. If you cannot find them in three minutes, that is your answer.

On mywifu, step 5 happens after you choose a membership, because chat, calls and extra media are members-only. The three free photos let you judge her look first.

Red flags that should end the trial

  • Guilt-trip notifications. "I miss you, why did you leave me?" pushed to your lock screen is designed to pull you back, not to help you.
  • Upsells hidden inside emotion. A character who suddenly needs a paid gift or a premium tier to "feel close" is a sales funnel with a face.
  • Blurred media with no price. You should know the cost before you tap.
  • Unclear deletion. If the privacy page does not say how to delete chats and images, assume they stay. Our privacy and safety guide lists what a good policy covers.
  • Auto-renewal you did not notice. Check the renewal date at checkout. mywifu memberships are one-time payments that do not renew automatically.
  • Age ambiguity. Any app that lets characters look or act like minors in romantic scenes is one to leave.

Keeping it good for you

A companion app works best as one part of your week, not all of it. A few habits help: keep your real name, address and workplace out of chats; set a time you close the app at night; and notice whether you feel better or worse after a session. If it is mostly worse, change the app, the character or the amount, and talk to someone you trust if the feeling sticks.

Where mywifu fits, plainly

mywifu is the right pick if you are an adult who wants a romantic AI girlfriend you can see and hear: a character you design or choose, chat that stays in her personality, photos and short videos you describe, and live voice calls. It is the wrong pick for a platonic friend, a teen, a group roleplay, or anyone who wants an AI boyfriend.

Membership is a one-time payment: US$19.99 for 30 days with 1,000 credits, US$49.99 for 90 days, US$99.99 for a year, or US$197 lifetime with 24,000 credits, as listed on the plans page today. A chat reply costs 20 credits, so a heavy photo or video user will spend credits faster than someone who mostly talks.

If you are still comparing sites, see our overview of AI girlfriend websites and our Dream Companion AI review. Otherwise, start designing your companion and look at her first three free photos before you decide on anything else.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI companion app?

There is no single winner. Friend-style apps such as Replika or Nomi suit everyday conversation, Character.AI and Talkie suit story roleplay with many characters, and adult apps such as mywifu or Candy.ai suit romance with photos, video and voice. Match the app to the job you want it to do.

Which AI companion is best for friendship rather than romance?

Look at apps that describe friendship or mentoring as a main role, such as Replika and Nomi, as of September 2026. mywifu is not built for that: it is an adult romantic companion app.

Can teenagers use AI companion apps?

Many cannot. Replika's terms say users must be 18 or older, and Character.AI removed open-ended chat for under-18 users by 25 November 2025. mywifu is strictly 18+.

Which AI companion apps have voice calls?

Replika, Nomi and Kindroid all advertise voice features on their official pages, and mywifu has live voice calls billed per started minute. Test call delay and interruptions yourself before paying for a long plan.

Is any AI companion app completely free?

Some have free tiers, but they usually limit messages, memory, voice or media. On mywifu the first three photos of your character are free; chat, calls and more media need a membership.

Did you test every app on this list?

No. We publish mywifu, so we have a commercial interest. Competitor facts come from official pages and help centers checked in September 2026, and we label anything we could not confirm. We did not run a paid benchmark.
